Spectaculator 5.1 is now available from the App Store.

An additional nine games have been added, courtesy of Vortex Software.

Three additional games have been added to Spectaculator itself (free to existing users):

Cyclone

Highway Encounter

Revolution

A further game pack, Vortex Anthology (six games) has been added to the in-app shop:

Vortex Anthology:

Alien Highway

Android One

Android Two

Deflektor

H.A.T.E. (Hostile All Terrain Encounter)

T.L.L. (Tornado Low Level)

iCloud® Save States

An exciting new feature in this version is ability to save your progress to iCloud.

Each game now has a 5th slot with a cloud symbol next to it which is used to save and load to/from iCloud:

This is really useful for situations where you’re playing a game on one device (e.g. your iPhone whilst on the tube) and then want to continue playing from your current position on a different device (e.g. your iPad when you get home).

Other changes:

Fixed a layout issue with the in-app shop in some countries (thanks Arjun!).

Thumbpad now displays as a digital joystick or analogue joystick depending on the game.

This is the first in a series of blog posts I’ll be writing about the new debugger features in the up and coming version 9 of Spectaculator.

The monitor/debugger in Spectaculator is probably the one feature I’ve never really been happy with. It works, but it’s pretty basic.

For Spectaculator 9, the feature has been completely overhauled making it much more powerful and useful.

I’ve been using it extensively to create the dynamic patches for the games included with the iPhone/iPod/iPad version (these patches automatically configure the game control on-the-fly amongst other things).

Breakpoints

Breakpoints have had a big overhaul and now come in two flavours – Memory Read/Write/Execute and I/O Read/Write:

Additionally, a condition can be set using C-like expression syntax. The breakpoint will only break if the address it hit and the expression evaluates to true.

Other new features include:

Enabling/disabling of breakpoints.

Making breakpoints memory page-specific.

Breaking after a certain number of passes over the breakpoint.

Setting a label for easy identification.

Version 4.0 is now available from the App Store.

Changes to Controls

In previous versions of Spectaculator, control selection (Keyboard/Kempston Joystick/Sinclair Joystick etc.) was pretty much like it is on a real ZX Spectrum – you were required to navigate a game’s menu and select the correct option.

In 4.0, this is now unnecessary:

The correct controls are automatically selected for each game and locked so they can’t be accidentally changed. This applies to all the built-in games as well as those available as in-app purchases.

In most cases, simply tap the red button to start a game (rather than having to pop-up the keyboard.

The original cassette images of the games have not been modified – for those of you who like to wait three minutes for your games to load, you can still do this

These changes should make the games more accessible to retro gamers around the world who have never owned a ZX Spectrum.

I had an interesting time recently with Apple’s review process. So far, for me at least, App reviews have been largely uneventful.

I’d previously posted on Twitter that I’d added support for the iPhone 5’s and iPod touch 5th gen’s bigger screens.

It was pretty easy to do:

Create a new launch screen image of the right dimensions and name it Default-568h@2x.png (iOS 6 spots this and enables fullscreen on the iPhone 5).

Make some minor changes to reposition some of the screen elements.

All in all it was pretty painless as I’d been sensible and designed the UI to scale anyway.

As Xcode 4.5 can no longer generate ARM6 code (required to support the older iPod touch 2G), I went back to Xcode 3.2 to make the final build and submitted it.

A few minutes later I got this message back from Apple:

Invalid Launch Image – Your app contains a launch image with a size modifier that is only supported for apps built with the iOS 6.0 SDK or later.

Hmm.. bit strange. After googling for a bit it turns out you have to use Xcode 4.5+ if you want to support the bigger screens. Doing so, of course, means iPod touch 2G users can no longer upgrade.

Most people will tell you this isn’t a concern as these users don’t buy anything from the App Store anymore.

To be sure, I had a look at the server logs for the in-app purchases and found there were a few of them still out there buying stuff – “a few”, in this case, meaning “not many”.

I resubmitted with Default-568h@2x.png removed to disable the bigger screen support and Apple approved it.

Oddly though, they’ve still put the bigger screenshots on the App Store which is a bit misleading:

In the short term, my current plan is:

Ship 4.0 which will still include support for iPod touch 2G users (this is currently in review).

Once approved, I will submit 4.1 which will enable support for the iPhone 5/iPod touch 5th gen screen.

The iPod touch 2G will then be no longer supported.

Apologies in the meantime for the inconvenience to any iPhone 5/iPod touch 5G users out there.
