About the Currah µSpeech

The Currah MicroSpeech is an allophone speech synthesiser, which means that it uses individual speech sounds strung together to make intelligible speech. The MicroSpeech has an unlimited vocabulary and can synthesise any word or sentence in the English language. The user merely has to become familiar with he speech sounds of English (which are different from letters) and the allophone symbols used to represent them.

A few games were written to use the MicroSpeech. A list of these games can be found here.

Important

Due to the way in which the original hardware was implemented, many games will fail to run with the µSpeech enabled. As a rule of thumb, you should keep it disabled until you want to play a game that uses it.

Note

  • The µSpeech only works on the 16k and 48k Spectrums. It will automatically be disabled when emulating 128 or +2 models.
