Where can I download more games and other programs for ZX Spectrum emulators such as Spectaculator?

World of Spectrum and the TZX Vault keep an extensive archive of Sinclair ZX Spectrum sofware (currently about 11,000 titles).

It is important to remember that nearly all ZX Spectrum games are still under copyright.

There is an excellent article here on the World of Spectrum website regarding common misconceptions on distributing vintage computer games.

How do I enable the Spectrum+ cursor keys so I can navigate the 128/+2/+3 menu screen?

  • On the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Keyboard tab.
  • Choose Spectrum cursor keys for the keyboard joystick and click OK.

Tip
The Spectrum+ cursor keys are equivalent to pressing CAPS SHIFT and 5, 6, 7 or 8 (i.e. the old 48K rubber Spectrum cursor keys). You can leave Cursor joystick enabled for the keyboard joystick and just hold down the left shift key (CAPS SHIFT) when you want cursor key mode.

When I open a tape file (TAP/TZX), the program does not load automatically

This normally means the 'auto load' and/or 'auto play/stop' features on the cassette recorder are disabled.

To re-enable them:

  • On the View menu, click Cassette Recorder (if the cassette recorder window is not visible).
  • Ensure both the 'auto load' and 'auto play/stop' buttons are both selected (click them if not).
  • Re-open the tape file and the program should load automatically.

For further information on the 'auto load' and 'auto play/stop' options, consult Spectaculator's built-in help.

Why are the instructions to some programs available from the Help menu and others are not?

Spectaculator looks for a file with the same name as the loaded program but with a .htm, .txt or a .rtf extension. If it finds one, it assumes it contains the instructions for the program and makes them available from the Help menu.

Can you send me a copy of game <insert title>?

Only games for which we have a distribution agreement with their rights owners are distributed with Spectaculator.

However, the World of Spectrum website has secured free distribution permission for many titles.

If you own an original copy of the game, you can always load into into Spectaculator via the 'Load from Audio Source' feature which allows you to load from real cassette tapes.
